Tree Pruning

Trees come in all sorts if shapes and sizes and no matter how big or small there are ways of effectively pruning a tree to give the most benefit. Pruning should be considered as the first most important option for retaining the tree. Our main objectives of pruning are to create and maintain a strong structure by guiding the trees architecture. As well as removing potential hazards. When to prune? Consideration will be taken to make sure that pruning causes the least harm to your tree and wildlife is undisrupted. Time of year can be important to pruning as root growth of the tree can be affected.

Canopy Lifting

This is where the lower branches of the tree are removed to increase the distance between the ground and the lower branches of the canopy.

The benefits of crown lifting:

  • Allows more light to pass through the canopy

  • Opens up desirable views which may otherwise be blocked.

  • Keeps lower branches away from passing traffic and pedestrians.

  • Keeps branches away from buildings

  • Increases the height of the tree canopy

Crown Reduction

This is where the overall size of the canopy is reduced whilst maintaining the shape and structure. This usually occurs when the tree has outgrown its ‘acceptable area’. How this type of pruning affects the tree’s health varies between species, which is why you need our specialist operatives. We can determine the suitability of your tree for pruning so that the best outcome is achieved, and the physiological stress on the tree is reduced. Crown reductions will also decrease canopy weight and wind-sail effect, which is highly beneficial for managing a tree with a significant structural defect.

Crown thinning

This is the process of removing/reducing selective branches in the tree canopy to improve light passing through the tree and to reduce wind sail affect on the tree. It also helps to reduce the weight of heavy limbs, remove deadwood and removes limbs that are crossing/rubbing with the potential of causing a future hazard. With proper techniques this can be done in a way which causes the least physiological stress on the tree.

Reducing away from buildings

Usually carried out when a tree is brushing against or close to a building. This type of pruning focuses on reducing or removing lateral limbs away from a building whilst maintaining the trees overall shape. This can also reduce impact of pests moving from the tree onto house roofs.

Pollarding

This is a severe tree pruning technique used on specific species of trees that need to be managed in relation to their environment, or if there is substantial instability in a tree. Pollarding can cause rapid regrowth and is a technique that may need to be carried out on a yearly/two yearly basis.

Deadwood/broken or snapped limb removal

Perhaps you have a branch which has snapped and is hanging down or you have noticed lots of deadwood in your tree with no leaves. We can carry out pruning to remove these hazards and improve the safety of the tree for people and traffic passing beneath it.

Tree removal

Sometimes when a tree has come to the end of its life or the hazards it is producing outweigh the benefits of maintaining it, then it is time for removal. Often there can be obstacles below the tree, or risk of falling debris or logwood bouncing towards buildings. Thanks to our skilled and qualified operators, we can pick the most appropriate method for your situation. Our operators are specifically trained in Rigging and felling operations so have a clear understanding of how to lower the wood in the safest and most effective manner, as well as having great knowledge about the compatibility of the equipment they are using to lower heavy logwood.
